Think Through It – Incarnation

Do you ever think about the Incarnation? God incarnate, God made man, God becoming a man; do you ever think about that?  I mean really think about it, God the creator of the universe became a man and lived among us.

Jesus came as response to the sinfulness of man. Jesus was the obedient follower of God the Father, he never sinned and yet instead of being rewarded for his obedience, he was punished.  See Jesus took on the punishment that we deserve, in order that the reward that He deserved might be applied to us.  This is what the Reformer Martin Luther called “The Great Exchange,” and what an exchange it is!  So this week I want to encourage you to take a few moments to reflect on the incarnation, that God became a man to save you; and that in Jesus, even sinners like you and me can find the forgiveness and life in his wonderful name.

Victim: Phil Robertson and the LGBTQ community find common ground

Many members of the LGBTQ community have long considered themselves victims of a society of hate, and with good reason.  There are countless tales of men and women being beaten, spat upon, slandered, and discriminated against in the work force due to their homosexual or transgender lifestyle.  This kind of discrimination is certainly not becoming of a free American society, and it also should not be a characteristic of a Christian man or woman.  That being said, the Bible clearly says in many places that homosexuality is sinful and the church has always held to this belief.  Furthermore, anatomical homosexuality is clearly not God’s design for human sexuality.

Phil Robertson made statements for the January edition of GQ magazine reflecting a biblical position on homosexuality.  His comments may have been a little raw and unpolished but so is his character on the hit A&E series, Duck Dynasty, and nothing Robertson said was unbiblical.  After an impassioned response by many members of the LGBTQ community A&E chose to suspend Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty indefinitely for his comments.  In other words Phil Robertson was hated, slandered, and discriminated against in the workforce for holding to Biblical position on human sexuality.  Phil Robertson has become a victim of societal norms and in this, members of the LGBTQ community have been successful in finding common ground with him.

I’m Jason Dees encouraging you to Think Through It.

Think Through It – Origins

The Bible tells us that in the beginning, God created a man and a woman, Adam and Eve.  They both disobeyed God and therefore they fell out of fellowship with God and were forever banished from the Garden of Eden. Interestingly in the past few decades genetic science has given great evidence that this account is true.  In 1987 a groundbreaking study was published by scientists Rebecca Cann, Mark Stoneking, and Allan Wilson theorizing that all human life has one common female ancestor that lived somewhere in North Africa or the Middle East.  This research has since become widely accepted.  Further DNA research has shown that from that common ancestor humans have migrated all over the planet and all have many things in common For example, every culture throughout history has shown a desire to know and be connected to God.  Coincidence? Or proof that the account of human origin in scripture is the truth.

Think Through It – Resurrection

What would you say is the greatest event in world history? Was it the end of World War II? The defeat of the Spanish Armada? Or perhaps Julius Ceasar crossing the Rubicon? While each of these events has largely shaped global culture they all pale in comparison to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  If that is true, if Jesus truly died, was buried, and then after three days came back to life, then that necessarily changes everything.  No one no matter how great has been able to overcome death, except for Jesus.  So whether or not you go to church, or like the teachings of Jesus, or want to call yourself a Christian, you have to do something with the resurrection.  If Jesus wasn’t raised, then Christianity falls apart and is a bogus religion, but if the resurrection is true, then Jesus really was the Son of God, what he said is true, and the world has been forever changed.

Think Through It – Wisdom

Football coaches are known for giving good advice.  I’ll never forget Pat Day urging his players that in the face of disappointment the only thing that you can do is to “lay your guts out on the line again, and again, and again.”  Another quote I have put to memory is Bear Bryant’s advice, “if you lose say little, if you win say nothing.” You know all of us are looking for truth and wisdom in life.  We all want to know what is right so that we can do what is right.  But how do you know what is true or more difficultly, how do you know what is wise?  Fortunately God has revealed ultimate wisdom and truth to us in His word and The Bible tells us that, “the wisdom from above, God’s wisdom, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”
